A few weeks ago, my boyfriend brought home a single serving pack of Nutter Butters and left them on the kitchen table. I don’t know where or why he got them, but they sat on our table for a week without being touched, taunting me. We don’t usually keep a lot of snacks in our apartment, partially because grocery shopping in New York is the worst, and mostly because I just don’t like having snacks around – I’m weak and get tempted too easily. Cheez-Its, for example, are simply banned from the apartment because I could eat the whole box in one sitting. I’m not proud. Continue reading

Caipirinha Cupcakes with Cachaça Buttercream (a.k.a “The World Cupcakes”)
With the World Cup in full swing, the city has come alive with closet soccer fans, and I’m loving every second of it. People who have seemingly never even seen a game before are calling out international players by name, gasping at missed opportunities as if they were as exciting as a ball in the back of the net, and coming out in masses to cheer on the US as they advanced to the knock out rounds. It’s as if they finally understand why soccer/football/fútbol, whatever you call it, is the most exciting game in the world. Continue reading
Lemon-Poppy Seed Cupcakes with Almond-Cream Cheese Frosting
I’ve been holding out on these lemon-poppy seed cupcakes since I made them a few months ago for my coworkers birthday, and I apologize profusely for not sharing the recipe sooner. Partly because a couple coworkers have been begging me for the recipe and partly because I think they would have been a perfect addition to a backyard barbecue, which almost every American was doing this past holiday weekend. After all, if you can’t spend the day lounging on the beach, grilling out in your backyard is the obvious next-best option. Continue reading
Orange Chocolate Chip Cupcakes with Bourbon Buttercream Frosting (a.k.a. The Old-Fashioned)
Last weekend, my mom, sister and I hosted a “psuedo”-surprise birthday party for my dad. I write “psuedo” because my dad, not being a fan of surprises, knew the party was happening, but was not made privy to the guest list. So he was certainly surprised to see over fifty of his closest friends and family show up to celebrate. That’s right, my dad’s a pretty popular guy. Continue reading
Lemon Pound Cake with Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting
It’s been hot in New York. Like a sweltering, 95 degrees, 100% humidity hot. Like you can’t walk outside for more than 5 minutes without losing all motivation to do any of the things you were going to do, and instead decide to go back home and pass out in the AC. So when the weather forces you to stay inside on a lazy Saturday afternoon and you’re staring out the window, dreaming you were lying on a beach and escaping from the misery that is NYC in the summer, what else is there to do than bake up something delicious to pass the time, right? Continue reading
