Lemon-Poppy Seed Cupcakes with Almond-Cream Cheese Frosting

Lemon-Poppy Seed Cupcakes with Almond Cream Cheese Frosting

I’ve been holding out on these lemon-poppy seed cupcakes since I made them a few months ago for my coworkers birthday, and I apologize profusely for not sharing the recipe sooner. Partly because a couple coworkers have been begging me for the recipe and partly because I think they would have been a perfect addition to a backyard barbecue, which almost every American was doing this past holiday weekend.  After all, if you can’t spend the day lounging on the beach, grilling out in your backyard is the obvious next-best option.  Continue reading

Orange Chocolate Chip Cupcakes with Bourbon Buttercream Frosting (a.k.a. The Old-Fashioned)

The Old Fashioned Cupcake

Last weekend, my mom, sister and I hosted a “psuedo”-surprise birthday party for my dad. I write “psuedo” because my dad, not being a fan of surprises, knew the party was happening, but was not made privy to the guest list.  So he was certainly surprised to see over fifty of his closest friends and family show up to celebrate.  That’s right, my dad’s a pretty popular guy.  Continue reading

My favorite Banana Bread

My favorite Banana Bread

Whenever I buy a bunch of bananas, it never fails that I have at least 2 or 3 left at the end of the week that have turned completely black and are no longer very appealing for topping cereal or sliced on peanut butter toast. Have you noticed everyone’s obsession with pumpkin lately?  It’s seriously everywhere – in muffins, doughnuts, pies, cakes, cookies, it’s now even in coffee!  Not that pumpkin coffee is a new thing, it’s been in Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts for a while now.  But every year when the days start to get shorter and the air is a bit cooler, I walk by these “coffee shops”, and can’t help but wonder why this has turned into a craze.  Maybe I’m just old fashioned in liking normal traditional lattes, but I wonder what a barista would do if you wandered into a cafe in Rome and tried to order a “skinny, soy, non-fat, pumpkin caramel latte, per favore.” They’d probably laugh in your face and serve you an espresso.   Continue reading

Pistachio Petit-Four Cake

This past weekend we threw my sister Sam a surprise birthday party, and oh boy was she surprised.  She had absolutely no idea that there were 30-40 of her closest friends waiting behind the door to her apartment.  Two of her friends did most of the work, setting up her apartment, bringing food and drink, decorating adorable mason jars with twine to serve a specialty cocktail, and adorning her entire apartment with beautiful flower arrangements that we asked each guest to bring. Lemon Pound Cake with Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting

It’s been hot in New York.  Like a sweltering, 95 degrees, 100% humidity hot. Like you can’t walk outside for more than 5 minutes without losing all motivation to do any of the things you were going to do, and instead decide to go back home and pass out in the AC. So when the weather forces you to stay inside on a lazy Saturday afternoon and you’re staring out the window, dreaming you were lying on a beach and escaping from the misery that is NYC in the summer, what else is there to do than bake up something delicious to pass the time, right?  Continue reading
