I had every intention of upping my game here during the holidays and posting all the recipes that I made over the past few weeks.  Recipe after recipe of cookies perfect for easy holiday baking.   Gratins and salads that make the best side dishes for Christmas dinner.  And a recipe for the very best scalloped potatoes.  But alas, Christmas was a whirlwind of eating, drinking, laughing and reminiscing with loved ones, and as a result, I severely neglected my blog.  Though, despite my neglect,  I now have a backlog of recipes to keep you updated in the new year.  And even better, thanks to my very considerate boyfriend, I got an amazing camera for Christmas, so visuals will be so much better than previous pictures taken with my shabby iPhone.  Continue reading

Award Winning (!!) Biscoff Buttercream Cookies

This past weekend my coworker, who is also an avid baker, and I teamed up to compete in a cookie bake-off competition in Brooklyn. And we won 3rd place!!!!  The event was hosted by The Takedown, a food competition for the amateur home cook. It was so deliciously Brooklyn. The competition consisted of 30 cookie baking teams each with their own tempting recipe.  Some were unique (Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies with a little kick), some were classic with a spin (sunflower seed chocolate chip cookies) and some complimented by ingenious marketing (the Cookie Vermonster, a pecan maple cookie with a Cookie Monster sidekick, come on!).  Continue reading

Bourbon Sea-Salt Caramels

I’ve told you about my love for salt, right?  And it’s pretty obvious I have a serious sweet tooth.  So when I saw a recipe for salted caramels with bourbon (!!!!!), in this month’s Bon Appétit magazine, it was a stop everything, run to the store and stock up on ingredients kind of moment.  And oh my, am I glad I did.  These are out-of-control good, the bourbon adds this subtle smoky flavor, and the flaky sea salt contrasts perfectly with the chewy sweetness of the caramel.  Also, did I mention they have bourbon in them?  It’s cold outside people. And bourbon keeps you warm.  It’s sort of a no brainer. Continue reading

There has been an overwhelming obsession with doughnuts lately here in New York.  They are everywhere, in popup bakeries, on fancy restaurant dessert menus, in coffee shops, not to mention a certain “donut” shop (seriously, they don’t even spell it right) which now dominates Manhattan and Brooklyn real estate.  Doughnuts are now even being turned into French fusions, with the creation of the cronut (don’t get me started).  So seriously, what is the obsession with the doughnut?  I think the answer might be obvious, it’s fried dough.   Continue reading

It snowed yesterday.  Seriously?  I’m just not ready for this.  I haven’t even gotten around to buying a new winter coat, my old one bearing the burden of five New York winters that it’s just not capable of surviving another. But I’m stubborn, avoiding the fact that winter is quickly approaching by unreasonably walking around New York City in a light, fall jacket, while snowflakes clutter the sky and people race by, bundled in down jackets and wool scarves.  Not to mention the fact that every store is now adorned in holiday decorations, blinding us with tinsel and plastic evergreens, an obvious sign that winter is coming. Buttermilk Banana Pancakes

You can never have too many pancakes recipes, right?  I find it’s always best to adapt based off a recipe that you know works well, and add and subtract ingredients from there.  You might remember my Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes with Sautéed Apples.  They are adapted from my absolute favorite pancakes recipe from Nigella Lawson.  This recipe never fails me, and I always enjoy throwing in new ingredients, depending on what I have in the kitchen.  I happened to have a bunch of bananas in my kitchen which I never got around to eating.   Continue reading

Maple and Pecan Apple Crisp

There’s been something in the air here in New York that’s hard to put into words.   With the cool mornings, perfect for a run along the East River, turning into sun drenched afternoons ideal for exploring, that make way for perfectly crisp nights dining out.  When all you need is a light jacket to wander through the streets of the East Village, lined with red and yellow leaves and leftover Halloween decorations.  Where every restaurant has pumpkin on the menu and every coffee shop has spiced apple cider for sale.  It’s been nothing short of perfection.  I’ve never seen so many posts on Instagram or Facebook documenting weekend outings to orchards for apple picking and apple cider tastings and comments on how perfect the weather has been.   Continue reading
